The day democracy died

Martin Webster (NF) and young friend...
Here they come, walking down the street, getting the funniest looks from everyone they meet. Hey! Hey! They're the Fascists!

Between writing the article below and publishing it... the following has occurred.

France votes for a Nazi Party ☀︎ The American Supreme Court votes for Presidential Dictatorship ☀︎ The festering presence of Faragist Fascists looms large ☀︎ The European Project virtually concedes defeat ☀︎ Democracy sidelined...

Like many others; Be they political pundits, commentators, vloggers, bloggers, YouTubers, the man on the street or the woman in the board room, I have fallen into the trap – The Farage Trap.

I have dismissed Nigel Farage as a rather grubby little racist, a part-time Hitler, a Poundland Powell or even re-imagined him as a 21st Century Sir Roderick Spode! And, in my defence, it was fine to do so whilst he continued to merely snipe from the sidelines like the bullies little buddy that he so often seemed to be (the Richard Hammond of Politics, in fact).

However, the time for the piss-taking and milkshake throwing should stop (no matter how amusing it might have been at the beginning). He is a very dangerous individual and his quasi-patriotic schtick is a neat distraction from the very sinister ideas he leaks into mainstream political discourse (Southern Water must marvel at his ability to seamlessly pollute the water with his bigotry suffused effluent and yet there is barely a condemning word from the ghouls of Fleet Street - in fact a couple of the TV groupies seem to be getting a tad moist at his ability to 'command an audience').

He is not a character, nor is he a jovial little Englander. Neither is he really “speaking out for true Britons” or speaking for the outsiders. He is a public school educated, banker, who cheats at Golf (as numerous witnesses at West Kent Golf Club will attest), had a long-standing affair with a political aide (according to Daily Mail) and his murky flirtation with the National Front in his youth still lurks in the unwritten truth of his life story.
Stop the NF - Nigel Faragists!

Anyway. This isn’t about name-calling. Those days are gone. This is about fighting for the future. We must not allow them a foothold. Current polling predicts that Reform UK will win possibly 7 seats. We have a clear example from the past where we can see the impact of tiny parties on the edges of the conversation growing rapidly to take overall control.

So, we do not have an option. We must confront this threat at every turn. Through the power of our imagination, the force of our arguments and our commitment to building a brighter, better, more inclusive and vibrant country. We must not let the Faragists take a single step more towards power.

What is it about being English?

What is about being English that sends people (of wherever), in to such a tailspin? Whether it is mealy-mouthed class traitor Lee “3 parties” Anderson and his warped view of that there London/England. Or it is Suella Braverman & Liz Truss and their even more jaundiced perspective of our country, so infected that they find themselves siding with the likes of right-wing boot-boy Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson (aka Tommy Dick Fingers)). Even the current PM Sunak, talks about our values and inclusivity at the same time as warping non-dom tax regulations to benefit his own family, whilst bemoaning the ‘mob rule’ that he mistakenly believes is spreading all over the country.

Of course, these rather dim-witted politicians ostensibly talk about Britain, when they are only talking to their English constituents. So much so, that I fully expect Ireland to untie & unite within the next 20 years and Scotland to return a Yes vote for independence (assuming that Keir Starmer’s continued plod towards power remains so relentlessly uninspiring). Leaving slack Ol’England floundering in the wake of its own self-importance.

The truth of the matter is: Nobody likes us and we pretend we don’t care, but we bloody well should. The English (and don’t forget I am one – have you seen the blog title?) do have an over-inflated sense of self-importance built on the shifting sands of history. The whole sun never sets on the Empire malarkey has long since evaporated and quite frankly the reparations for crimes committed in the name of the Union Flag have still to be tallied up.

Before launching into one, I should address the British v English thing. I genuinely only know of (or at least recall) a few people who truly identify as British (and they are virtually all arch-royalists or from non-aligned immigrant families), I have never met an Irishman (well maybe a couple of Mega-Oranj Prods), Welshman or Scot (Prods again?!) who declare themselves as British first. Even when corralled together in some hotchpotch sporting allegiance or two (The Lions/Olympics), being a Brit is rarely ever mentioned…

But the purpose of this piece is not to rehash the old school leftist view of Britain as being a washed-up colonial construct (even though it is #smileywhiteface). It is more about trying to embrace the reality of being a 21st Century Englishman and coming to terms with what that actually means.

I’m very aware that some of my writing illuminates an England that exists more in old photographs, unsent postcards, the distant embrace of young love, the scratched grooves of long deleted LP’s and discredited movies. My England, the one I inhabit from this distance is sinister, haunted, beautiful, idyllic, pissed, broken, vicious and only 24 hours away.

My England smells of burnt toast, cut grass, creosote and ozone. My England is cold, wet, warm, windy, freezing and has a leaking roof. My England is shuffling in the queue at the post office, hanging out by the off-licence and still waiting for the number 11 bus. My England still thinks it is good at all sports, despite the evidence.

You get the picture… I could go on forever (and I probably will elsewhere). But I’ll stop and try and keep focussed for the time being. What could the new English really become? The vague reference to Billy Bragg is very appropriate here because his book ‘The Progressive Patriot’ has led me to reappraise what being English could be.

For those unfamiliar with his book, apart from being part autobiographical Bragg explores the impact of the Magna Cart, the People’s Charter, Civil War, the Second World War, the Miners’ Strike on the national consciousness. He also grapples with what it means to be a patriot in a country where (at the time he wrote the book) the BNP were running in General Elections. And now, given the invidious nature of the Savile Row besuited bigots (Anderson, Tyce, Farage etc.) the question is even more relevant.

How can I be proud of my country when we continue to churn out a bunch of repugnant racists who are getting more and more airtime from their odious right-wing media paymasters? How can I be proud of my country when an increasing number of my fellow countrymen are seemingly hellbent on out-doing the mad dog MAGA mob of the US with the wildest of conspiracy theories.

It is a major challenge and one that I feel ill-equipped to confront head on. That being said, I’ll be jiggered if I’m simply going to stand back and hand over the country of my birth to those members of society whose crazed claims and warped world view makes us seem positively rabid. England isn’t as bad as everyone thinks… but it could well get worse.

But how can we make it better, without more bloodshed, an armed uprising or hiding in a small hut somewhere in the Lake District. Firstly, we need to be honest with each other and perhaps more importantly with ourselves. For too long the myth has dominated the reality and we cannot head somewhere new if we don’t know where exactly we are heading from. A journey cannot end without there having been a start point!

So, time for honesty. And that leads us to the second thing, we must confront the bullshit wherever and whenever we see it. For example, the neo-liberals who seem to have grasped the steering wheel profess to hate the nanny state. And yet, these bastards have got an uncanny way of trying to get involved in absolutely everybody else’s business: From who they sleep with to which pronoun they prefer, from where to go on holiday to which religion they can or indeed cannot follow.

These charlatans must be tackled on their view of England… they relentlessly tout ‘our values’, ‘our way of life’ and ‘our traditions’ and yet they can never name a single thing that reflects these indistinct ideals. Be it poor old John Major and his “Britain will still be the country of long shadows on county (cricket) grounds, warm beer, invincible green suburbs, dog lovers and pools fillers”. Or Farage’s updated “Respect”, “Decency” and “not talking down our great country” schtick that doesn’t stop him from buggering off to the States every time Donald McDonald clicks his fake tan stained little pudgy fingers.

Instead of their warped view, we should inspire each other to live up to a higher more honest set of social principles. In short, we should aim to live up to the mantra of several high-performance sporting teams and instil a simple ‘No Dickheads’ culture.

Glib? Well, a little, what did you expect – new patriotic zeal on a stick. Valid? I think so. A starting place for a New England? Absolutely! In fact, following that theme and re-writing one of the most shameful tropes of the early 70’s ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’ (sadly often displayed on houses for rent).

The New England mission statement should perhaps simply read as follows:

·      No Racists

·      No Bigots

·      No Dickheads

... Oh and No Oxymorons!

Big Bad Dom - Covid enquiry

Human existence throws up millions of remarkable things daily including; how funny it is that a picture, a song or a scent can transport me back to a specific time and place in a heartbeat. Whilst I’m certainly not comparing the vision of the sunken, haunted scowl of Dominic Cummings at the COVID inquiry to the feelings invoked when seeing Turner’s “The Fighting Temeraire’. Or the image of my then ex-girlfriend standing by the record player with her new boyfriend every time I hear ‘This Old Heart of Mine’ by The Isley Brothers or even the giddy response I get when a well-dressed businesswoman glides past leaving the most subtle trail of Eau Dynamisante in her wake.

But certainly, the preoccupied hollow look of the Conservatives (unelected) Covid Commissar shot me straight back to 2020, sitting at my home office desk during the height of the pandemic.

Now, I must confess to being somewhat morbidly interested in old Dom. The fact that he moved to Russia after graduating from Oxford is often overlooked (maybe it isn’t true, another Wiki-lie?). His determination to eviscerate and evaporate obstacles (or taking up wilful and contrarian positions) is something to be examined in more detail at another time.

It also reminds me yet again that the right often seems to have the reputation for more radical thinking and “big brain” ideas than the left, a sort of the devil has all the best tunes motif that strikes me as being very tired and overplayed. When surely there are enough dynamic leftist thinkers proposing new and vibrant ways of creating a more equitable society – surely? (Note to self: like whom? more work to be done!).

Anyway, back to the matter in hand. Cummings at the COVID post-mortem has dredged up all sorts of memories of a) my own personal experience of lockdown and b) the complete and utter shit show that the Buffoon and his puppeteer oversaw. A reminder to all concerned never ever leave a complete narcissist in control of a country in a crisis (UK/USA you have been warned).  To be honest, the lived experience in Australia seems to have been considerably better than that of GB & NI, despite having our own clown at the helm.

The horror of Dr Stewart Pearson (aka the Dominator) thinking he knew better than Westminster mandarins might be technically true but at no single stage did old Dommy two brains comprehend that his reprehensible and neolithic approach to man/woman management might be adding to the carnage. The upside/downside of deluded self-styled thought leaders is that their interpersonal skills are so appalling they can never see things through.

Anyway, those lockdown memories keep flooding back.

Heaven help us all

And so, on the day we should be celebrating the departure of the blonde be-wigged Billy Bunter tribute act, we find out that his replacement is the anti-royalist, Liberal Democrat, Remainer, Conservative, Royalist, Brexiter Liz Truss, the stupid man's Margaret Thatcher. The Iron Lady? More like Tin Lizzy!

And so...

The ragged mob of narcissists have started to turn in on themselves. From Trump to Cummings... the pace of hate just became too much and the 'outsiders' find themselves back on the outside.

The real shame is that they'll never properly be brought to account for their litany of mad schemes and contemptible actions.

Anyway...

Time to move on everyone.

Perfidious Albion - #3

The horrorshow that is Brexit & Covid beggars belief. And yet, the blatant cronyism, piled on top of the numerous grants offered to numerous friends of the Tory government - are like breadcrumbs leading us to the bigger project that is rumbling along inside No.10 -

The break up of the Union.

Perfidious Albion - #1

I've done well. I mean credit where credit is due. I've tried really hard to keep my part of the bargain, anyone can see that. The problem is, when I promised myself to commit to updating https://thethingsimissaboutengland.blogspot.com on a more regular basis. I challenged myself not to fly off the handle at the incompetence, laziness, ineptitude, brazen pilfering, backhand deals with dodgy Eton mates and comfy arrangement with coked-up/messed up city chums and demonic overseas backers.

In fact, I swore to myself that I would not call out these feckless bunch of Neo-fascist chancers with their ghastly anti-immigrant stance and their divisive; smash the poor, starve the weak, kill the old and feed the rich policies.

I also made sure I wouldn't draw attention to their numerous U-turns, vile distractions and abysmal solutions.

I've done well. Unlike...

General Election - The Beginning of the End Game

I've been voting in UK general elections since 1983. My track record (33%) is pretty poor...

1983 - Lost
1987 - Lost
1992 - Lost
1997 - Won
2001 - Won
2005 - Won
2010 - Lost
2015 - Lost
2017 - Lost
2019 - ?

However, this time feels as though it is the most crucial of them all. Britain has been poised on the brink of chaos for the last 5 years and the last 18 months has seen the situation slide ever quick towards genuine disorder...

Sun-Tzu & The Art off Fucking Things Up - Part 6

Sun-Tzu & The Art of Fucking Things Up - Part 2

Further update from HWSNBN...

"Dr Stewart Pearson soundalike DC going absolutely Tonto. He is balls deep in a rage. Nobody is safe. PM is cowering in his bunker. SPADS cueing up to jump off roof. DC has alienated so many already. Only the most meek and placid are happy to put their cock in the door for him to slam. 1922 alarm bells ringing. Even RKM concerned but publicly trying to swing heft of The Sun behind beleaguered (hence KFC graphic). Johnson has got 3 days to gain control of No.10... you couldn't make this shit up!"

Sun-Tzu & The Art of Fucking Things Up - Part 1

A close acquaintance is fortunate enough (or otherwise) to be a bit of a player in the current to-ing and fro-ing in the darker corners of Westminster. I received this today...

"Badly dressed Leave Campaign Übermensch DC convince that his zen like mind games are propelling the country towards well... disaster actually. And quite honestly he doesn't care, in fact he stands to benefit significantly from the chaos and carnage he is reaping. £ collapsing - doesn't care. PM already been rumbled - doesn't care. Government majority lost in a trice - doesn't care. Marching BAME women out of no 10 at gunpoint - doesn't care. He is Farage's advanced guard. This is not about the Country or Conservatives (about whom  - doesn't care). This is about him and him alone. It is just a game, whether he wins or not  - doesn't care. The man genuinely thinks he is Sun-Tzu, when in reality he is nothing more than a cut price Dr Stewart Pearson."

English Civil War

When Johnny comes marching home again
He's coming by bus or underground
A woman's eye will shed a tear
you see his face so beaten in fear
an' it was just around the corner in the english civil war
It was still at the stage of clubs and fists
When that well-known face got beaten to bits
Your face was blue in the light of the screen
As we watched the speech of an animal scream
The new party army was marching right over our heads
Alright
There you are, ha ha, I told you so
Says everybody that we know
But who hid a radio under the stairs
An' who got caught out on their unawares?
When that new party army came marching right up the stairs
When johnny comes marching home again
Nobody understands it can happen again
The sun is shining an' the kids are shouting loud
But you gotta know it's shining through a crack in the cloud
And the shadows keep falling when johnny comes marching home

Hiding in plain sight (or ‘You always used to be able to spot a Nazi ‘cos he wore a badge’)

When I was 14 (back in 1976) one of the boys in our year suddenly started bringing in copies of ‘Bulldog’ the National Front’s newspaper. Bulldog, for the uninitiated was a combination of jaundiced articles, vile rants, badly drawn cartoons, recruitment advertising and requests for money to fight the scourge of Bolshevism and anybody else the latest group of British Fascists hated. The National Front, a fundamentally racist entity, had been recruiting at English football grounds from the early 70’s, with quite alarming success.

The disaffected young white male population gravitated towards the Front with undue haste. Barely a decade after the summer of love/height of the swinging 60’s, the UK had crumbled into a bitterly divided nation. A class war had erupted in the shape of the struggle between the miners and the government. The 3-day week and recession helped incubate resentment. And whilst the wealthy remained untouched, the white unemployed populace looked for someone to blame and the National Front found plenty of scapegoats for their rage… West Indian, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, African and Jewish communities were targeted and violence was never far away.

Eastbourne, sleepy old Eastbourne, the sun trap of the south and home to the largest collection of white over 65’s in Europe at that time hardly seemed a relevant recruiting ground for the NF. There were less than 20 BAME families in the town at the time and there was hardly anything to suggest that the situation would change. But the NF continued to peddle their ‘truths’and they went on a recruitment drive to turn the rather weedy youth of the town into some kind of elite Freikorps. A rather simple strategy of identifying the intellectually immature but physically intimidating was the way forward. And so, it came to pass that our school got its very own playground brownshirt – NaziBoy!

It began with a badge. Badges being quite high on the teen boys currency list. A little NF badge, if you were none the wiser, might seem like just another band badge – white red & black. The badge provoked interest and provoked a conversation or two. The recruitment process had begun. After the badge, some stickers. They’d start appearing on bus shelters, in the school toilets, on desks and noticeboards. The message was simple “PAKIS GO HOME”. The message was repetitive. The message was of course, repulsive!

The follow up was then the newspaper. ‘Bulldog’ full to the brim with odious, ill-concealed racist rhetoric left the reader in no doubt who was to blame and what should be done. Terrace humour mixed with a mangled manifesto hewn from off cuts of Enoch Powell’s ‘rivers of blood’ speech. Battle-lines had been drawn.

Fortunately, to the eternal credit of all but two of my classmates, the message was received, understood and swiftly rejected. Membership of the Anti-Nazi League/Rock against Racism skyrocketed and robust debates were had on every bus home, the untruths were confronted at each and every turn. Admittedly the significant shoeing that was meted out to NaziBoy helped to sway any of the undecided.

The point of sharing this little snapshot of a political awakening on the South Coast of England is twofold:

1)   Recognition of my schoolmates who swiftly and rigorously rejected the doctrine that NaziBoy had been championed with spreading.
2)   To also recognise that it was easy to confront such an obvious affront to common decency because the tactic of playground recruiting was so route one.

The problem of course now is that, the same enemy has become far more sophisticated in their branding, message and approach. Route one is no longer viable, these tricky fuckers are far more subtle. The use of well-worn tropes is still happening, not least because the rebuttal portals are no longer geared up to respond. The significant leap to the right by media houses has left rigour and context trailing behind all those chasing clicks. The various techniques and approaches to get people on their own (the digital equivalent of getting somebody round the back of the back sheds and threatening them with a right kicking) are so marvellously subtle thanks to targeted EDM’s, FB Posts etc.

What I’m trying to say is that the bastards aren’t wearing badges anymore and it makes it easy for the weak and embittered to join the slipstream of hate…

It is our duty to call them all out. Every single one of them, every single time. If we don’t before you know it, NaziBoy and his chums will not only run the playground, they’ll own the whole damned country!

"Politics doesn't affect me" #3

What then? When!

When they start charging you £80 for a prescription. £100 for a Doctor's visit...
When the smell from the plague pits starts to interfere with the Sunday bbq...
When the private health 'funds' deny treatment to "whoever we decide"...
When the only doctors and nurses left refuse to work pro-bono...
When the latest antidote is only available to gold card members...
When they refuse to take on patients with high blood pressure...
When they deny those with a family history of cancer, anxiety...
or
When quarantine stations will only accept MasterCard...
When the new flu strain sweeps across Southern Asia...
When they kick your parents out of their care home...
When your child can't get a hospital bed...
When antibiotics stop working...
When botox blisters burst...
When small pox returns...

What then? When!

"Politics doesn't affect me" - #2

Take the not inconsiderable issue of racism. Whether it is the time honoured tactic of fear-mongering, be it the sinister musings of Enoch Powell's 'Rivers of Blood' speech to the laughable but no less ghastly ramblings of Billy-Bunter-come-lately Boris Johnson. They all seek to serve the same end.

Divide the working people and then divide the profits amongst the ruling class. Point out the differences, scaremonger and watch the powerless turn on themselves, whilst the powerful reap the benefits. Of course the prime exponent of this is the current resident of the White House...

It is no longer acceptable or appropriate to do nothing. Doing nothing is not allowed any more. You must revel in rebellion. It doesn't mean taking up arms, although the occasional Strawberry Milkshake does seem to be the mode of expression du jour. But whatever you do, you cannot do nothing.

Put simply if you don't actively condemn you passively condone!

"Politics doesn't affect me" - #1

When I started my first ever day's work in a local government office in true blue Eastbourne, I proudly declared to my colleagues that I was a Labour supporter (despite being too young to vote). This seemingly innocuous statement provoked a funny range of responses from a dismissive 'pah' from some, to a derisive 'bloody commie eh?' from my ex-army supervisor and his little sidekick.

Whilst I suppose I pretty much expected their response, after all, almost everyone voted Tory in Eastbourne "even the Seagulls". What I didn't expect was the relatively cool 'older' bloke (all of 27 years old, I suspect) to lean into the conversation with this observation...

" Of course. If you aren't a socialist by the time you are 20 - you haven't got a heart. If you aren't a conservative by the time you are 40 - you haven't got a brain..."

A pithy observation maybe but something that stuck with me nonetheless. It struck me then that it was such a lazy and cynical view of the world - genuinely heartbreaking. It assumed a pre-ordained path and almost instinctively gave one permission to just give up on politics, to give up on life... Perhaps in a time when news was more uniform and access to more radical thought came via University or progressive relationships, it was more understandable that some people believed that politics wasn't for the likes if us.

However, surely the same argument is not quite as valid? I am still staggered at the number of relatively 'sane' adults I know who profess ignorance of or, more regularly, actively avoid 'politics'.  If the last 63 years have taught us anything it is that when politicians (and their sponsors) are left to their own devices, they have a tendency to fundamentally f'things up. If they are not held completely accountable they will drive division, increase their own wealth and royally screw us over... every single time!

Time for a change, time to resist, time to remember - you have still got a heart!
